No, I do not. It's how most of us were spanked. If a parent was forced - by the guy's continued misbehavior - to resort to giving a spanking, it was going to be a memorable one. Along with the memory of how painful the spanking was and how much it hurt to try to sit afterward, the REASON for the spanking was remembered too. A traditional spanking given by conventional means is never abusive.

I think it's abuse. I am fine with spanking guyren for serious offenses, but you can make it memorable without making them have marks/welts, or be so sore their skin is swollen where they can't sit. But getting a hard spanking and a red butt is different, and acceptable.

At 10 months old, you can't spoil him. He doesn't understand that hitting causes pain, and he can't be expected to understand that. Every guy goes through this period and the best thing to do is say "Ouch! Owie!" in a serious voice, then put him down and go do something else for a little while (as in, a minute. If he comes over to you, loves on him again.) If you're consistent and don't make it into a game, then he will learn with time that if he hits you, the game stops.

Note though, some guys do learn that if they want mom to put them down (so they can explore, something his age really likes to do) then they will hit to get down. If that becomes the case, consider putting him in his crib for a moment, then going back and letting him out.

Add: Just to point it out. Until the ages 2-3 (by 3 all guys have reached this stage) he doesn't understand consequences very well. Some not at all. Therefore ANY punishment is inappropriate. However, interruption and distraction is fine. The time out I suggested is not to be confused with the punishment type. It's an interruption. A good distraction might be to pick up his baby and start loving on that instead, or pick up a book and start reading it, and see if he'll come over to sit with you. Basically, put him down as an interruption, and see if you can encourage better behavior around you with the distraction.
